Planetary Sanding vs Drum Sanding
Most of our sanding is done with a Bona PowerDrive planetary machine. The real difference is not drum versus planetary — it is the grit sequence, the paper, and the prep before stain.
What a drum sander does
A drum or belt sander runs one abrasive surface in a single direction with real downward pressure. It removes material aggressively and can flatten a badly cupped floor, level a patch, or cut through decades of old finish quickly.
Because everything cuts one way, it leaves a directional scratch pattern. If that scratch is not fully refined afterward, it shows up as streaking under low-sheen or natural-oil finishes.
What a planetary sander does
A planetary machine spins a large plate carrying several heads that rotate in the opposite direction. The scratch cancels itself out instead of all running the same direction, so the surface arrives more uniform before the finish ever touches it.
On about 90% of our jobs we do the whole sanding sequence with the Bona PowerDrive planetary sander. The machine itself is only part of that. The rest is the grit sequence and the paper.
Why the paper matters as much as the machine
The initial cuts use ceramic solid-backed paper. That backing keeps the abrasive flat and aggressive when the floor still has old finish, high spots, or cupped edges that need leveling.
As we move to finer grits we switch to ceramic mesh paper. It cuts more cleanly, produces less visible scratch, and lets the final grits do the refining work.
A planetary machine with the wrong paper does not give you a flat, refined floor. A planetary machine with the right sequence and paper does.
Water popping before stain
When we are staining, we water pop the floor before applying color: a controlled application of water that opens the grain evenly. This lets the stain absorb more uniformly across the field and gives a deeper, more consistent color.
Stain means at least one extra grit
Stain makes sanding marks more visible, not less. Once the floor is water popped and the grain is raised, we need at least one additional grit of sanding beyond what a clear finish would need. Skip that grit and the stain will telegraph every uneven scratch.
Why the finish exposes the difference
Under a glossy oil-based polyurethane, minor sanding flaws hide in the shine. Under a matte waterborne or a hardwax oil, they do not. Those finishes reveal the wood exactly as it was left, and any residual directional scratch or inconsistent surface shows up the first time low afternoon light rakes across the room.
As matte finishes and natural oils have become the norm, the kind of uniform, refined surface a planetary sequence produces has gone from a nice extra to a requirement.
How we sequence it
Coarse ceramic solid-backed paper to remove finish and flatten. Medium grits to clean up the field. Fine ceramic mesh grits for refinement. Water pop if we are staining. One extra sanding grit for stain. Then the finish system.
That final refinement pass is what makes color absorb evenly and what makes a low-sheen or natural-oil finish look clean instead of streaky.
