Oiling a 7-Inch White Oak Floor

Seven-inch white oak plank across a kitchen and dining area, previously water damaged near the sink, sanded flat over two days. Four planks replaced. The owners had chosen hardwax oil for repairability.

Hardwax oil penetrates. That means it takes up color from the wood in direct proportion to how open the grain has been left. Any place where the sanding scratch is deeper — an edger swirl, a spot where someone leaned on a machine — will drink more oil and go visibly darker.

On a narrow strip floor you can sometimes get away with a slightly uneven surface. On seven-inch plank in a room with a window down one whole wall, you cannot. Every flaw sits in the middle of a wide, uninterrupted board with nothing to break up the eye.

So most of the work on this project was not the oiling. It was the planetary refinement pass afterward, going over the whole field until the surface was genuinely uniform.

Worked in by hand in manageable sections, then buffed off before it could set. The window is short — leave it too long and the excess skins over and has to be abraded back off.

The photograph shows what the oil does the moment it goes in: the raw wood on the right looks pale and dry, and the oiled area on the left has depth that was already in the wood, just not visible.

Two applications, twenty-four hours apart, then a slow cure. We left the owners maintenance oil and walked them through fixing a scratch, which they will need to do eventually and which takes about ten minutes.

Wide plank plus hardwax oil is the most beautiful combination in this trade and the least forgiving. It is worth the extra day of sanding every single time.
