Black Mountain Red Oak Refinish

This red oak floor had the usual wear pattern: a tired, ambered finish in the traffic paths, scuffs and scratches where chairs had been dragged, and the overall flat look that happens when a waterborne or oil-modified finish has finally given up after years of service.

The boards were 3¼-inch solid red oak, still well above the tongue, which meant the floor had plenty of life left. We started with a coarse ceramic solid-backed paper on the Bona PowerDrive planetary sander, then worked through the grit sequence, switching to ceramic mesh for the finer passes. The PowerDrive handled the flattening and initial cutting cleanly without the aggressive risk of a belt or drum machine.

Because this was a natural finish, we didn't need to water-pop for stain. The goal was to keep the red oak's own color intact and let the sanding sequence do the work. We refined through the grits until the grain was clean and consistent, then vacuumed and tacked until the surface was ready for the finish system.

We finished with Loba Easy Prime as the foundation sealer, then two coats of Loba 2K Duo in satin. The Easy Prime builds a consistent base and preserves the natural color of the red oak, while the 2K Duo gives the durability and feel a lived-in floor actually needs. The satin sheen catches light without looking glossy or plastic.

The result is a floor that looks like red oak should — warm, clear, and finished by hand rather than buried under plastic.
