Red Oak Under Carpet, Brought Back

There is almost always a hardwood floor under the carpet in an older home here, and it is almost always in better shape than the homeowner expects. This one came up to reveal original 2¼-inch red oak with an orange-amber finish, dark spots, tack strip holes along every wall, and staples everywhere.

The prep is the unglamorous part and it matters more than the sanding. Every staple pulled by hand, tack strip nails removed rather than driven through, and the perimeter checked so the edger has clean wood to work.

Sanding was the Bona PowerDrive planetary — coarse ceramic solid-backed paper to cut through the old finish and level the field, then progressively finer grits on ceramic mesh to refine. The old dark spotting came out with the finish; nothing here needed replacing.

Natural again — no stain, no water popping. Loba Easy Prime followed by Loba Easy Finish in satin, which keeps red oak reading warm rather than orange.

The after photograph is the same floor that was hidden under carpet. Original wood, one hundred percent of it, sanded flat and finished properly.
