1976 Burnsville Pine, Neglected Finish Restored

This 1976 Burnsville home came with a pine floor that had been neglected for years. The finish was failing, the surface was dirty, and previous repairs by the general contractor left the field uneven and in need of a real refinishing job rather than a quick cover-up.

We started with the Hummel drum sander at 60 grit to cut through the old finish, surface build-up, and the unevenness from the repair work. Removing that existing finish and build-up cleanly is what lets the rest of the sanding sequence do its job.

From there we switched to the Bona PowerDrive planetary sander, running 60 grit Bona green ceramic to flatten and refine the field, then Norton mesh at 80 and 100 grit to clean up the scratch pattern and leave the pine ready for finish.

Pine can read cool or blotchy if it is not primed carefully. We used Loba AmberPrime to add warmth back into the wood and give the topcoats a consistent base. It is not a stain — it is a tinted primer that lets the pine look like pine, only richer.

Two coats of Loba 2K Duo in satin went on over the AmberPrime. The result is a warm, clear pine floor with a finish that can handle the traffic a 1976 home has already seen once and is ready to see again.
